Portage to Portage Paddling Project

Jake Stachovak dreamt up the “Portage to Portage Paddling Project” when he was a kid. A 5000 mile solo kayak journey around the Eastern United States, it’s an adventure that will link the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes via the Gulf Coast, East Coast, and New York Canal Systems starting and ending in the small town of Portage Wisconsin.

He is a fabulous writer and photographer and is showing us parts of the United States of America that are largely forgotten. He started in the middle of an El Nino winter and has been paying the price.

He not only deserves better weather, he deserves our support because he is reminding us of all the paddling possibilities in our own back yard.Good luck Jake!UPDATE: Expedition completed. From Jake’s Blog:

The End Of The End

Two hundred eighty days and 5740 miles since it began on a crisp early winter day last December, I have shared a daily account of this trip and my life. With a bumpy start, and many ups and downs, it has been an experience of a lifetime. I am so glad I could bring you along for the ride. Today I am pleased to report that I have paddled the last stroke into Grafton Illinois.

The loop is complete.
It is done.

CONGRATULATIONS Jake!
